I've been internet-ness for months now, thus being the reason for not having posted in ages. I ended up brushing out my dreads a bit before they turned a year and a half. They just weren't working for me at the time, I was really irritated by my hair and I lost a lot of self esteem because of them. I always loved them and I intend on having dreads again in my life, next time definitely for a lot longer than this first time. I decided to keep my one crazy dread that all my friends deemed as "paw" because over the course of his little dreadie life he looked a lot like a paw print. =) He's still chilling on my right side right above my ear.
( ++++ )
With all the hair that came out while I was brushing them out...I used them to make extentions for my best friend. She's going to deep clean them and dye them to match her hair color. =) Hooray for recycled hair!
I dont' miss them as much as I thought I would, honestly. Not saying I didn't love my dreads...I just am really happy to have my brushable hair back. A cut and color is to follow and I'll try to make up a proper timeline and post it within the week or so.
I hope everyone had a great christmas. Enjoy the new year, lovelies.

I sat on the idea of cutting my dreads off for a little bit. Reminded myself that it wasn't a new idea for me. Weighed the pros and cons. I also sat and thought of the past year, of all the hurt and emotion that I went through that weighed heavy on my heart and weaved itself through my dreads. The things I got up and brushed off and kept moving through. I felt an almost cathartic relief when I finally sat down in my recliner and snipped them all off. I was advised to go to my hair dresser but I felt it was too much of a personal thing to be done by anybody else but me. In the end, I left one, my favorite for my mother to cut off. She reassured me that I was beautiful regardless, but she was relieved to see them go. Do I regret cutting them? No, maybe a little in the back of my mind but not really. Will I dread again? Definitely. Do I miss them? Of course. It's an odd feeling to run my hands through my (albeit short) hair again.
I cut them off about two inches from the root and combed the rest out, then got a cute little cut from my favorite hairdresser.

I need your help. I've had my dreads for about a year and a half, and I'm just so discontent with them. The length is good, but I hate the color. I never leave them down anymore, I never feel right with them. I'm never satisfied with how they look. I'm seriously considering cutting them off.
However, if there was a way that I could do something new with them (aside from just dying them. I'm already considering that), I would.
Anyone have suggestions?
Here they are lately:
( And one more under the cut )

helloooo wide world of dreadies.
So I just moved to New Zealand from Australia! I cant really be bothered going into why and blah blah blah right now but yes... I am in Auckland at the moment staying in the fat camel backpackers in town so I was wondering whether perhaps there were any of the lovely dread heads I saw in town on GUDU.
If so... wanna show me around? I have a crotchet hook and free time on my hands :D
Drop me a line! It would be lovely to start meeting some likeminded lovelies as soon as possible.

Hello again, I know I just posted not long ago. I promise this will be the last post for at least another two months. My dreads are about three weeks old and I just got home from Florida with the family! It was so nice and warm and breezy, then today I had to come home to the freezing cold Michigan =[ but anyways, I just wanted to post some pictures. My dreads on the back of my head are so tight at the ends its crazy, and some kinda feel like the are loosing up, but all in all the progress is going very very well. My family does not hate them either! I was scared what they where going to say, (because I didn't tell them) but most of them didn't say anything about it, and the ones that did just said, well thats different! so I am happy that they are not against my decision to get dreads!

Hi all~
Long time member/lurker, haven't posted in a whiiiiiilee.. Anyways, next month my dreadies will be 7 years old.....say what? yah, 7 years old. I love them dearly, but I am feeling as though the hair at my roots/scalp could be a little thicker to hold the weight of my babies. My friend at the beauty shop next to my work suggested this product called Nioxin, and I am on Treatment 2 for thinning hair. I used it(once) so far. Has anyone heard of or used Nioxin? Any experiences with shampoos designed to make hair thicker or fuller? I have been wanting to thicken my hair for a couple years now as that was when I started noticing the thinning. I have tried different shampoos with no real results, the latest was Jon Frieda's "Root Awakening" and didn't see any results at all. I use rosemary oil and that does help and I loooooooove the intense tingle.
So, I know that there have been discussions in the memories on thinning hair but I dunno, I just haven't seen the answers that I need. I know that some of my perceived thinness is due to the fact that I have wide sections but I still want thicker, fuller roots.
And how many of you use conditioner on a regular basis? In the past 7 years I have maybe used conditioner 3 times?? Perhaps using conditioner might strengthen my hair? I have just been doing the basic old wash and simple maintenance over the years but now it's time to get serious and make sure my hair is thick and healthy! Any info, advice, suggestions?
much love and blessings

Dreads vs Locs

So I'm beginning to give serious thought to trading in my dreads for locs.
I've been admiring the thinner style of locs for some time, but the only thing really putting me off is the regular maintenance that goes into them....twisting, and re-twisting, and especially the practice of applying product to the hair to help it stick.
So I'm looking for a dialogue here...dreads? Locs? Pros and cons of both.
EDIT: thanks to
lishd for bringing to my attention that there might be clarification needed.
Dreads-what most people think of when they think of dreads or locks, or locs....backcombed, or natural, product free, and usually simply kept clean.
Locs-in this instance, the style of thinner dreads or locs formed usually by two strand twist, twist and pin, and usually maitained by twisting the roots periodically and/or using product and heat to set the locs.
Now mind, I'm not saying these are THE definitions of either or both. If you guys have other ideas or opinions, give 'em...this is me looking for a dialogue.
